The University of Connecticut, Department of Human Resources seeks applications for a full-time HR Specialist (USP 2) in the areas of compensation and classification. Under the direction of the Manager, the successful incumbent will assist with the design, implementation and administration of the University’s compensation philosophy, programs, policies and procedures as well as serving as a resource to explain compensation policies and systems at all levels of the organization. This includes job description development, job analysis and evaluation, guidance to administrators and department managers, workforce planning, and organizational design efforts.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Uses published surveys to obtain and analyze market pricing, make recommendations on appropriate compensation levels, prepare reports on findings and handle administrative steps to formalize recommendations.
- Reviews survey results and proactively provides analysis of market trend and recommendations for changes to existing structure or individual adjustments based on the data.
- Reviews new positions in anticipation of recruitment to ensure appropriate classification; works with manager to modify and create new descriptions, which accurately reflect current roles, responsibilities and requirements.
- Provides guidance to HR and department managers on pay decisions, salary offers, policy and guideline interpretation and job evaluation. Builds rapport with customers, communicating in a concise, customer-focused format.
- Performs job evaluations to rank work based on established level criteria.
- Reviews employee requests for classification review, makes classification/compensation recommendations; prepares written reports on findings, and communicates with stakeholders regarding employee classification and compensation.
- Reviews jobs for reorganizations, performance reviews and special projects, including both job audit and evaluation.
- Evaluates and formulates recommendations regarding the development and administration of University pay structures and compensation policies based on external market analysis and internal equity.
- Participates in workforce planning and organizational design efforts.
- Develops and documents procedures to streamline classification and compensation processes and ensure compliance with FLSA, ADA, and other regulatory and contractual requirements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree and three to five years of classification and compensation experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers including executives and senior management.
- A strong understanding of HRIS systems and database management.
- Knowledge of government regulations as they apply to HR and compensation programs, including knowledge of federal and state wage and hour laws.
- Demonstrated strong accuracy and attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced environment with competing deadlines and priorities.
- Ability to develop and present information on broad range of complex classification and compensation policies, guidelines and administration.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) designation or progress towards CCP.
- SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SCP) or Certified Professional (CP) designation.
- Experience in higher education.
- Experience in a collective bargaining environment.
- Broad understanding of the entire Human Resources discipline.
- Experience in project management.
APPOINTMENT TERMS
This is a full-time, permanent position. The University offers a competitive salary and outstanding benefits, with a target salary range between $60,000-$75,000 commensurate with experience.
