Job Description:
Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy at the University at Albany seeks a Director of Internships and Career Services who will be responsible for managing the Rockefeller College Office of Career Development. The director will develop and provide internship and career services to students in the School of Criminal Justice and the Departments of Political Science and Public Administration and Policy and manage the internship process for the College's academic programs.  In addition to direct services provided to students, the director is responsible for cultivating existing relationships with employers and external stakeholders and seeking to establish a network with new employers and internship providers, both within the Capital District as well as priority areas such as Washington, DC, and NYC. In addition, the director is responsible for the collection and management of internship and employment data required to ensure compliance with academic program and accreditation requirements.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Cultivate and foster relationships/partnerships with organizations employing interns and build external partnerships with potential employers.
  • Supervise the Undergraduate Internship and Career Coordinator and graduate assistants assigned to the Career Office.
  • Manage the internship process for academic programs with an internship requirement, which includes identifying and approving appropriate internship placements as per the academic program guidelines, communicating with internship supervisors regarding program requirements and employer responsibilities, assisting and training students with the application and search process, participating in the evaluation process and internship program assessment, tracking student hours, placements, and documentation, and interacting with students and employers to address any issues that may arise
  • Manage and instruct the internship courses related to required undergraduate and graduate internships.
  • Direct and administer electronic data systems to ensure compliance with academic program requirements and NASPAA accreditation.
  • Manage staff and work with relevant faculty to support the College's Semester in Washington program.
  • Develop and manage programming aimed to address the specific needs and interests of Rockefeller College students (e.g. info sessions on internship requirements and opportunities, panel discussions on public sector career opportunities, connecting students with alumni and mentors working in relevant fields, skill development workshops, hosting employer visits).
  • Stay up to date on the specialized application requirements for public sector careers. Assist students with resume preparation, interviewing skills, and job search strategies; edit job-related materials for students.
  • Collaborate with faculty from the School of Criminal Justice and the Departments of Political Science and Public Administration and Policy on issues related to internships and career services.
  • Provide support for recruitment and advancement opportunities, which includes participating in graduate recruitment activities as needed, interacting with alumni to foster mentoring and career opportunities for students, writing content for College publications to highlight career opportunities and success stories, and participating in professional development activities including, but not limited to, the NASPAA Career Professionals Conference.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in a college or university career services office or closely related experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of career development theories, career coaching techniques, and career decision-making.
  • Working knowledge of public policy, public affairs, political science, international affairs, and/or criminal justice job markets.
  • Experience in program development, evaluation, and data analysis.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Zoom, and career management software (e.g. Handshake).
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in business, educational administration, public administration, counseling, college student personnel, or related field.
