Assistant Director of Student Involvement for Fraternity and Sorority Life

 

The George Mason University Student Involvement Office is seeking a student-centered professional for the open position of Assistant Director of Student Involvement for Fraternity and Sorority Life. About the Department:

The Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) Cluster is responsible for the oversight of the FSL community comprised of 40+ chapters, four governing councils (i.e., Interfraternity Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, College Panhellenic Council, and the United Greek Council), and Order of Omega honor society. This position provides direct advisement to two governing councils, advisement of chapters across all 4 councils, and supervision of one Graduate Assistant. The position coordinates the marketing for FSL and the development and implementation of civic engagement and DEI efforts for the FSL Community.

 

About the Position:

The Assistant Director of Student Involvement for Fraternity and Sorority Life is an administrative faculty position that reports to the Associate Director of Student Involvement for Fraternity and Sorority Life. As part of the professional staff of Student Involvement, this individual will work collaboratively with other departmental staff, which includes five other Assistant Directors, Business Manager, Office Manager, three Associate Directors, and the Executive Director of Student Involvement. The successful candidate should be able to manage multiple tasks, have an ability to connect with a diverse range of students, and express a true passion for Student Affairs work. Specific Responsibilities include:

Advising & Supervision

  • Share in the advisement of 42 FSL organizations through the office’s cross-council advisory model;
  • Directly advise 2 of the 4 governing councils (National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), College Panhellenic Council (CPH), Interfraternity Council (IFC), and United Greek Council (UGC); and co-advise the President’s Council;
  • Supervise, train, and develop one Graduate Assistant;
  • Advise and provide support for recruitment and intake processes for 2 governing councils; and
  • Assist with development and implementation of the expansion processes for 2 governing councils.

 

Program Development & Implementation

  • Coordinate the FSL Peer Educator program, workshops focused on risk reduction and member development;
  • Coordinate civic engagement programming for the FSL community;
  • Coordinate diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts for the FSL community; and
  • Develop and facilitate workshops and trainings including, but not limited to, risk management, scholarship and academic support, social programming, values-based leadership, group dynamics, conflict management, etc.

 

Administrative

  • Oversee marketing and communication for the FSL area (including social media, website, marketing materials, and newsletters);
  • Monitor the academic progress of organizations, and design programs to encourage scholarship within the FSL community;
  • Provide support for general FSL programs (e.g., Glance into Greek, Officer Training Series, FSL Leadership Retreat, New Member Education, NPHC Step Show, Greek Week, Standards of Excellence, etc.); and
  • Serve as a resource for faculty and non-campus advisors to Greek Letter organizations.

 

Unit and Division

  • Work collaboratively with University partners on existing and new University-wide initiatives;
  • Participate as an active member of the University Life/Student Involvement professional staff, attending departmental meetings, collaborating with other staff members, and assisting in-office and department-wide initiatives and programs;
  • Provide on-site supervision and advising, which sometimes includes physical event set-up, and evening/weekend hours;
  • Assist with major department programming efforts as needed; and
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Required Competencies/Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability in advisement and leadership development of students and student organizations;
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and the practice of open and effective communication with students, faculty and staff to build and maintain collaborative relationships;
  • Proven ability to build relationships with students and staff;
  • Demonstrated ability to engage in transformational leadership;
  • Knowledge in event management and risk management education;
  • Knowledge of fraternity/sorority governing council policies and procedures;
  • Demonstrated ability to provide follow through and meet deadlines; and
  • Ability to develop and implement educational/development programs on topics such as risk management, membership recruitment/retention, leadership, DEI, etc.

 

Preferred Competencies/Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to connect with a diverse range of students;
  • Strong ability to work independently and collaboratively with team members;
  • Ability to work as a team member in a high-energy, progressive and diverse department;
  • Proven skills of flexibility and adaptability to change;
  • Exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills;
  • Able to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines, work accurately and quickly with attention to detail; and
  • Knowledge/understanding of supervision.

 

Required Education/Experience:

  • Advanced degree or equivalent combination of education and related experience;
  • Progressive experience in direct advisement and leadership development of students and student organizations;
  • Experience advising a fraternity/sorority governing council;
  • Demonstrated experience working with a team to accomplish collective goals;
  • Demonstrated experience managing conflict and competing viewpoints; and
  • Experience in developing workshops, programs, and initiatives for students and communities.

 

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • A master’s degree in higher education, student personnel, counseling or a related field;
  • Professional work experience (typically obtained within 2 years or 1 year of professional work experience plus 2 years of paraprofessional/graduate assistant work) in higher education; preference in fraternity and sorority life activities;
  • Demonstrated experience advising multiple fraternity/sorority governing council;
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising staff;
  • Experience in developing civic engagement and DEI programs/initiatives;
  • Positive outlook and willingness to assist and collaborate with colleagues;
  • Experience in managing confidential information;
  • Experience in managing risk and crisis; and
  • Experience working in a high paced environment.
