Engineering Technician I/II
The City of Hanford is currently hiring for the following position: Engineering Technician I/II
Salary: $3,789.24-$5,446.16 monthly

The City of Hanford is recruiting one (1) vacancy in the Utilities & Engineering department. The position will perform technical engineering work in assigned area of responsibility including capital improvement projects, traffic engineering projects, and utility encroachment projects; and provide technical support to an assigned supervisor.
Engineering Technician I
This is the entry level class in the Engineering Technician series. Positions in this class typically have little or no directly related work experience and work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks. The Engineering Technician I class is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the II level. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes of assigned area of responsibility are learned.
Engineering Technician II This is the journey level class in the Engineering Technician series and is distinguished from the I level by the assignment of the full range of duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new, unusual or unique situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level.
Examples of Duties:
- Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Perform technical engineering work relative to assigned area of responsibility including, but not limited to, design, land development, capital improvements, traffic engineering, and/or public right-of-way encroachment permits.
- Perform basic manual and computer-aided drafting, routine calculations, field measurements and cost estimating for civil engineering projects.
- Design and prepare construction plans for City capital improvement projects.
- Draw and revise City maps, plans, block books and plats.
- Process encroachment permits, transportation permits, and all other permits issued by the department.
- Set up traffic counting equipment and compile recorded data.
- Prepare legal descriptions and easement maps; update City street and utility maps and other miscellaneous drawings.
- Review building plans, parcel and subdivision maps, and land use plans
- Provide routine technical services to other departments and the public.
- Provide staff support to various City commissions and committees; may prepare agendas, take notes, and prepare minutes as needed.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.

Qualifications:
Engineering Technician I
Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of engineering as applied to public works, utilities, transportation or land development.
- Pertinent laws and regulatory codes relevant to assigned area of responsibility.
- Drafting techniques and design formats using manual or computer-aided drafting.
- Principles, functions, and applications of engineering mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
Ability to:
- Perform technical engineering work in assigned area of responsibility.
- On a continuous basis, know and understand all aspects of the job; intermittently analyze work papers, reports and special projects; identify and interpret technical and numerical information; observe and problem solve operational and technical policy and procedures.
- On a continuous basis, sit at desk for long periods of time; intermittently twist to reach equipment surrounding desk; perform simple grasping and fine manipulation; use telephone, write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means; and lift or carry weight of 10 pounds or less.
- Apply technical engineering principles and practices.
- Read and interpret plans and blueprints.
- Prepare plans and drawings neatly and accurately.
- Calculate engineering design computations.
- Learn and understand City engineering policies and procedures.
- Use engineering and drafting instruments and equipment.
- Use sound judgment in recognizing scope of authority.
- Operate and use modern office equipment including computers and applicable software.
- Maintain regular attendance and adhere to prescribed work schedule to conduct job responsibilities.
- Utilize appropriate safety procedures and practices for assigned duties.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Relate effectively with people of varied academic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy.

Experience and Education
Any combination of experience and education that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
- Some drafting experience is desirable.
Education:
- Equivalent to an Associate's degree from an accredited college with major coursework in engineering, drafting, and/or mathematics including geometry and trigonometry.
License and Certificate
- May need to possess an appropriate, valid California driver's license as required by the position.
Engineering Technician II
In addition to the qualifications for the Engineering Technician I:
Knowledge of:
- Methods, materials and techniques used in the construction of public works and utilities projects.
- Topographic and construction surveying.
- Basic rules of traffic control; basic road and street construction processes.
Ability to:
- Operate Computer Assisted Drafting and Design (CADD) system.
- Operate highly technical survey instruments and oversee a topographical land survey crew.
- Review private development plans for compliance with City standards.
- Administer contracts; coordinate and review the work of outside consultants.
Experience and Education
- Any combination of experience and education that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
- Two years of responsible experience similar to Engineering Technician I with the City of Hanford.
Education:
- Equivalent to an Associate's degree from an accredited college with major coursework in engineering, drafting, and/or mathematics including geometry and trigonometry.
License and Certificate
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license.
